John McLoughlin Dr John Mc Loughlin
Managing Director (Europe)
Global Philanthropic Ltd

John Mc Loughlin joined Global Philanthropic in 2006. With over 20 years' experience leading high performing teams in top British universities (London School of Economics , School of Oriental and African Studies, and King's College London) his expertise includes major gift fundraising, annual funds, alumni relations, volunteer programmes, communications strategy, organisational change, managing and commissioning prospect research, and managing large-scale database projects.

At King's College London (1993 - 2000) Dr Mc Loughlin developed one of the most successful alumni programmes in the UK. He worked closely with academics and alumni leaders to transform an existing alumni association, to expand the contact list from 7,000 to over 70,000, and to create one of the first alumni offices in the UK to deliver a comprehensive range of services, events, publications and volunteering opportunities. His experience also included planning and managing annual funds. He initiated an innovative communications strategy to engage a very complex alumni body (with alumni from ten distinct colleges). This received a CASE Award for Excellence and led to sustained success in fundraising and alumni relations.

Dr Mc Loughlin joined the LSE in 2000 as a major gift fundraiser in the £100 million Campaign for LSE, becoming Head of Individual Giving in 2002. There he led a highly successful team which initiated new programmes (including scholarship fundraising, bequest fundraising, fundraising in several European countries, reunion giving, engagement of top volunteers, targeted cultivation events, and stewardship). He worked with academic staff and alumni volunteers, raising major gifts in the UK and in Greece.

Throughout his career Dr Mc Loughlin has been active in training and mentoring fellow professionals and has given numerous talks and presentations. He has served on the CASE International Commission on Alumni Relations and been a Co-Chair of the Alumni Track at CASE Europe conferences. He is co-editor of the book Across Frontiers: New International Perspectives on Educational Fundraising, published by CASE in August 2010.

Dr Mc Loughlin is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, with a doctorate in medieval history. He is strongly interested in the study of friendship networks, social capital and the history and sociology of philanthropy. He is also a peer reviewer for academic journals in the sector.
